A Panhandle Design Forum · Annual
Volume 01 — Inaugural Edition

Two hours of credit. One afternoon with the architects of 30A.

An annual gathering for architects, designers, and specification professionals practicing across Northwest Florida — from Tallahassee to Pensacola. Two sessions on residential design, a small group of practicing architects, and an afternoon held inside Walk Your Plans, a working full-scale plan environment where plans are projected at 1:1 throughout the space. One afternoon, once a year, the people doing the work in this market — in one room.

An annual tradition for the Panhandle.

30A Design Forum is a season-marking gathering for the architects, designers, and specification professionals of Northwest Florida. The intention is simple: a working venue, two sessions on residential design, and a cocktail reception where the people who build this corridor can be in one room without an agenda.

This is Volume 01 — the inaugural edition. Co-hosted by Walk Your Plans and Residential Elevators. The format is built to be repeated each June with new sponsor partners, new specification topics, and the same room of practicing architects who actually do the work in this market.

A working afternoon shaped around two specification problems architects face every week.

Custom Residential Elevators: Code, Design & Integration

Integrating private elevators into custom residences from schematic design forward — what to set early, what to leave flexible, and where the field always pushes back.

  • Hoistway sizing & machine-room configurations
  • FBC & ASME A17.1 code paths for residential
  • Finish coordination across cab, gates, & trim
  • Specification mistakes that drive change orders

Interior Doors in a Residential Elevator Project: Specification, Coordination & Install

A joint session presented by TruStile, Builders FirstSource, and Residential Elevators. The areas that need to be considered when ordering interior doors for residential applications — and how those decisions change when the project includes an elevator. Sizing, jamb depth, door prep, and trim, walked through end-to-end from spec to install.

  • Solid-wood vs. MDF construction & panel vocabulary (TruStile)
  • Sizing, jamb depth & door prep for residential applications (Builders FirstSource)
  • Trim options & coordination across spec, order, and install (Builders FirstSource)
  • Door pairings with elevator applications — clearances, swings, and coordination (Residential Elevators)

Conversations that come after class + Cocktails & hors d'oeuvres

For most architects, this becomes the more valuable part of the afternoon. A small group of architects, builders, and designers — many working on active projects along 30A — continuing the conversation in the same room, surrounded by the projected, full-scale floor plans the venue is built to host.

Walk Your Plans

The 30A Design Forum is hosted at the only studio in Northwest Florida purpose-built for full-scale architectural plan walkthroughs. Drawings are projected at 1:1 onto the studio floor and elevation wall — architects, builders and their clients walk the plan at actual scale before a single piece of dirt moves.

For the forum, the studio doubles as the venue: classes in the morning, reception in the same space, with plans projected throughout. There is no other room in the Panhandle that does this.

— What tends to surface in the studio
  • Kitchen and bath layouts that feel different than they read
  • Circulation paths that impact how a home is lived in
  • Door swings and clearances that don't work as expected
  • Misalignment between design intent and build execution

The kinds of issues that are difficult to evaluate on paper — and frustrating to resolve later.
